I Am The Unknown Soldier by ~blackpoppies:iconblackpoppies:

I am the faceless millions lying under the sod ,
Strangers in this world but known unto God.

I am every cry that was uttered, every prayer that was said,
Every life that was lost, every tear that was shed.

I am a world that grieved as a generation decayed,
I am the poppies that grow in the fields, to this day.

I am sweethearts and husband, I am brothers and sons,
I faced the front line; the cannons and guns.

I am the peace bells that rang at the end of the war,
I am a world that was changed by the horrors it saw.

I am all that was lost, and all that was earned,
I am the peace, the future, and the lessons we learned.

Author's Comments

It's hard for me to really explain what this poem is about.
When I visited the WWI battlefields in Belgium and France a year ago, we each put a poppy on the gave of the unknown soldier. We were then asked to give our soldier a name, and I named mine John. He was never a real person, but to me, John has meant quite a lot ever since. I've seen him as a symbol of the millions of soldiers who were killed in the First World War, and every war since.
Also, he was named for John Kipling, who was the son of Rudyard Kipling. I found his name on Thiepval memorial, and later learned that it was his father that chose the words 'Known Unto God' as the inscription for the graves of the unknown soldiers.
So basically, this poem is about my John, and everyhting he represents for me, but also about everything that the Great War was to everyone.

Critique would be appreciated!

"I am sweethearts and husbands
I am brothers and sons"

That line seems to be missing a few sylables (sp?) it might just be me but, I'd put.

"I am the sweethearts and husbands
I am the brothers and the sons"

Then I would also put,

"I am a world that was changed
By the horrors that it saw"

Rather than

"I am a world that was changed
By the horrors it saw"

But then again that might all be me, but I do really like this anyhows.
